Escape the cold and snow! Focus on your harp!
With your host, harp happiness expert Anne Sullivan
and guest faculty Mary Jane D'Arville
What if you had three full days to do nothing but play the harp?
Sounds good, right?
And what if you could play the harp and work alongside a few other harpists who were doing the same thing?
Now imagine that you have three full days to concentrate solely on your harp, alongside other like-minded harpists AND you can do it in warm, sunny Florida in February?
Now we’re talking!
That’s what the Harp Mastery Getaway Retreat is all about. I will be hosting a small group of harpists who want to do exactly that – focus on their harp playing for a few days in the perfect environment.
This is the ideal opportunity to not only settle down with your harp, but to pick my brain to help you chart your course for the rest of the year. I’d love to help you really make 2020 the year you take giant steps toward making your harp dreams your harp reality.
Why Harp Mastery?
What makes a Harp Mastery Retreat unique?
I confess – much of what makes this retreat special is what I love about teaching. I love to work with students who are committed to their harp playing, who are ready to let me help them dive deep, make big changes now and plan for growth in the future.
Having been blessed with wonderful teachers and privileged to attend one of the world’s foremost music schools – The Curtis Institute of Music – I feel a responsibility to pass on the knowledge that was so freely shared with me. No matter your background or wherever you are in your harp journey, we can work together to put you on the path to achieving your goals.
"Anne began her concert career at age twelve when she appeared twice as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She is known nationally as a recitalist and chamber musician, performing regularly with SPARX flute and harp duo, Duo Parisienne violin and harp duo, and the Easterly Chamber Players. Anne was a member of the music theory faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music from 1982-2002, where she taught harmony, counterpoint, ear training and keyboard harmony."
"Mary Jane's experience includes several years of college teaching as a former faculty member of University of Virginia, University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University as well as presenting master classes throughout the country including seminars at University of Michigan, Arizona State University, and Peabody Conservatory Preparatory Division. She has a background in both traditional and Suzuki methods of teaching, and approaches each student as the unique individual they are to nurture their personal learning style."
Friday, February 28: Arrival and Welcome Dinner
We meet, greet and eat. Of course, we will play some too, as we set the stage for the rest of the retreat.
Saturday, February 29: Learn Anything Fast
Stop practicing the slow way! With this sensible shortcut system, you can get that new piece in your fingers faster, and play it with more accuracy and expression, whether you're an experienced harpist or a harp newbie.
Sunday, March 1: 1, 3, 5, Go!: A Harpist's Practical Guide to Chord Theory
This is definitely not your usual theory course! Understanding chords is only helpful if you know how to use that knowledge. Discover how a little bit of "at the harp" theory will accelerate your learning, speed up your fingers and even help you improvise.
Monday, March 2: Free to Fly: Playing Without Fear
Imagine the freedom of being able to play your music for anyone anywhere without being hampered by nerves or anxiety about mistakes. A few surprising tweaks to your practice routine (and some top-secret strategies!) will have you flying high!

You’ll leave the retreat refreshed, relaxed and energized. That’s harp happiness!

REGISTRATION AND LOCATION
Registration is very limited. There will be a few rental harps available for those who can’t bring their own, but be sure to register early to reserve one.
The registration fee includes all the program activities and materials as well as all meals and lodging. We will be staying in a very large house in a resort community in central Florida. The house has its own pool and hot tub. Almost all the bedrooms have private baths.
The closest airport is Orlando International (MCO) which is a 40 minute drive or so from the house. Flights to Orlando are usually quite reasonably priced.

Not to worry! I will arrange for harp rentals for those who will need it. There will be an additional cost, probably between $250-300, based on prior years.
Generally, the participants are at all different levels, which works really well as everyone can learn together and contribute in different ways. In the past we have had some very experienced players and some relative beginners, and that is typical for our retreats.
You can read more about this retreat's program above. The mornings include some gentle stretching and eurythmics-style activities, followed by warm-ups and technique work at the harp and the masterclass. The afternoons are geared to individual work and coaching, with some ensemble playing and other fun activities added to the mix.
We will help arrange for ground transportation upon your arrival and departure - you won't be on your own in making the arrangements!
Whatever you're comfortable in! Casual, comfortable clothing will work just great. We typically plan for a nice, offsite dinner during the retreat, but won't pick out anything too fancy that requires its own special clothing. Just make sure you pack a swimsuit if you'd like to swim!
We typically hold two retreats each year - one in the beginning of the year and one in the fall. The dates and location for our fall retreat have not be set yet - but keep an eye out for an announcement that will allow you to get on our "first to know" list and receive details as they become available.
No, you don't need to prepare anything/any music for the retreat. This is all about working on what you individually want to work on.
